Data Recovery? How Do You Do That?

I was introduced to someone the other day, and after the usual small talk, she asked what I did.  Following a very brief explanation of what I meant by data recovery, there was a pause.  I cringed waiting for the inevitable question - “How do you do that?”

I always have a tough time with that question.  It’s not something you can answer in 60 seconds or less, because, well… it depends.  What are you trying to recover the data from and what’s the problem?  A 20 minute lecture is not great for social chit-chat.  So I decided to poll my co-workers to see if they had a better answer than “It depends” and a shrug.

“If I tell you then I’d have to kill you.”

“Very carefully”

“I have a magic wand… for those little laptop drives, I have a tiny magic wand.”

“Really well, actually”

“You should hope you never have to find out.”

All cute, but not exactly enlightening.  But I think I’ll go with the “very carefully” as it is at least accurate.  You are looking to have your data recovered because it is important to you, so we are careful with it.  Our focus is on the total integrity of your data.  We treat it as if it were our own.  Evaluations are done thoroughly and methodically, all internal repairs are done in a clean room environment, images are made of the media before recovery begins, the integrity of data recovered is checked, and all recovered data is scanned for viruses, trojans and malware before it is returned.  All very carefully.

This is not C.S.I. or even a spinoff.  There is no wand to wave over the disk so that we can magically and automatically read the data.  (They actually do that on the show!)  Methods and procedures built from years of experience are used.  Sometimes new ones are created to solve a new problem.  Data recovery is sometimes difficult and tedious, sometimes pretty straightforward, but always, if done properly, done very carefully.
